Basically the beach in Sri Lanka can be categorized in to two based on the geographical location, season when best to go there and the types of activities that are on offer. One section is the beach in west and South and the other is the eastern beach. The rainfall pattern keeps one part of these beaches rain-free throughout the year. The west and south coast comes into life from October to April when the rain is over and the sea is calm and the sky is pure blue. This is the long established beach destination for tourist. That brings the coast an ideal place to be in the winter vacation. The east coast is active from April to October. The beach stretches around 300km and it occupies one of the least developed regions of Sri Lanka. The area is very remote,far from Colombo, very less in population and ideal for people who would like to have a holiday out of the busy city environment. Negambo Beach

This is the closest beach to the Katunayaka International Airport, the county’s only international airport. This is only a 15 minutes drive from the air port. The beaches are wide and sandy. Arugam bay

Arugam bay is located in east Sri Lanka and it is 350km from the Capital, Colombo. It is regarded as one of the 10 best surfing points in the world.The best time to surf there is from May to November. For swimming and relaxation it is an year around destination. Arugam bay once hidden in the clouds of the war between the government of sri Lanka and the terrorists(LTTE). The war expanded three long decades and now the war is completely irradiated from Sri Lanka thanks to the current government led by Mr. mahinda Rajapaksha. Hikkaduwa

This is the first Sri Lankan beach attracted by tourists. Situated 93km to south of Colombo and 20Km from the southern capital Galle. it is world famous for its coral reefs. Glass flour boats and the other equipment for diving are available here for rent for the people who love to have a close look in the corals and the tropical fish. In the meantime it is a well established tourist destination so there is aplenty facilities of for tourist here. Various types of hotels,spas, antique shops are also available and the night life is eventful.

Bentota

Bentota is the water sport hub of Sri Lanka. It is situated about 60km south to Colombo. As the Bentota river falls to the sea at Bentota and the lagoon makes the area excellent for watersports.
Bentota is a very good destination for families with kids. With the safe swimming conditions the fun water sport activities and the exciting excursions makes it ideal for a relaxing holiday. Not to mention the world renowned 5 star hotels around the area.

Unawatuna

Unawatuna normally is very crowded with the locals in weekends. It is about 7km further south of Galle. In addition to the fabulous beach, Unawatuna is world famous as a turtle breeding ground.
Unawatuna is still a very quite place and excellent location to enjoy the tropical beauty. There are corel reefs as well near Rumassala and it is now quite popular as a bird watching location.

Nilaveli

Nilaveli is on the other side of the island, in the east coast. Like Arugambay this area was affected by the war with terrorist for about 30 years. Now everybody is free to go there and enjoy the beauty the nature has to offer.
The area is still very remote, therefore the facilities are minimal. Only handful of quality accommodation locations are available.
